BIOL 351 Fall 2011 Study Questions on Protists 1) Protists are a diverse group of eukaryotic microbes that are now classified in more than 20 different phyla. What phenotypic feature(s) do these organisms share that caused them to be lumped together prior to the advent of molecular phylogenetics? 2) Paramecium caudatum is a free-living protist. Paramecium live by ingesting bacteria or particles of organic matter. Describe how P. caudatum digests its food and excretes wastes. * oral groove gullet- food vacuole anal pore It uses its cilia to get food to the oral groove and then to the gullet. Once enough food has accumulated in the gullet, a food vacuole forms in the cytoplasm. The food vacuole moves through the cell and enzymes enter the vacuole to digest its contents. The digested nutrients go into the cytoplasm and the vacuoles becomes smaller. Once the vacuole reaches the anal pore, it ruptures and expels waste. 3) What are trichocysts? Describe experiments to test the hypothesis that trichocytsts help to defend P. caudatum against predation. What results would you expect if the hypothesis were correct?
