History Essay Review 07/03/2011 15:23:00 Essay 1.  Thesis: The liberal view of human nature and progress was one that involved  the rights to individual freedom and liberty characterized by private and public  spheres, urbanization and rationality with little interference by the  government.  These liberal societies that believed man was rational often  failed and were scrutinized in the latter 19th and early 20th centuries  because as societies grew irrational and classes became further divided  political movements, such as socialism and fascism were able to gain  popularity across Europe. 1. Topic Sentence: Liberalism originally attracted a following because it  represented individualism and capitalism.  o As seen by Mill in his document “On Liberty”  Capitalism Privatized social sphere – ushered development of women as  domesticity  Urbanization Because mankind is reasonable – everyone looking out for  themselves will contribute to overall wellbeing of society.
