03:27 Classification of Plants Solanaceae (nightshade family) Flowers  Floral parts in groups of five or six Fruits – berries  Ovary wall is edible Family = food, herbs, medicinals and ornamentals  Mainly members native to South America Ex: petunia (purple flower – is complete and perfect) Ex: tobacco – petals are fused  Ex: fruits – pollen is in the anther, hanging over flower  Tobacco – pollen goes around flower (purple)  Anther is continuous and is fused about the flower  Cleistogamy  – closed house   ensures that it will be self-pollinated  Can develop single flowers  Vegetables : know two  Eggplant  – solanum melogena Not cliestogamy  Open pollinated – visited by insects to pollinate  Asian eggplant, Japanese eggplant   lots of different eggplants (not always purple)
