Unformatted text preview: Final Essay Review 20/12/2010 14:40:00 North-South Relations: YES Economic: o Foreign Investment: Multi-National Corporations (MNCs): Northern MNCs are always looking into the business prospects that the global South holds Through their selling of goods, this ultimately creates a larger class division/disparity than already existed in the host country Sometimes, host countries participate in joint ventures in which state companies are partly owned by a foreign MNC and partly by a local form or the hosts state government This hopefully ensures the host governments cooperation, bypassing usual bureaucratic trouble such as corruption It would hopefully prevent the government from misusing the money as there is more oversight involved MNCs invest in a foreign country because of the inherent advantages of natural resources and cheap labor This VERY closely resembles colonialism which can lead to resentment by the people of the host people, which would offset the success of the MNCs Also, these joint ventures take away the power of the host people, thus pissing them off o FISHING EXAMPLE Furthermore, the MNCs may teach the people of the host country on what to do, but after the project is done, the people are only educated to do things that benefit the MNC Because of more highly developed infrastructure, middle- income states often get chosen by MNCs for investments as opposed to lower-income states, thus creating more resentment and a sharper disparity/divide in the global South This is also related to absorptive capacity as the MNC wants to benefit also Microcredit: This can be seen as a counter-example This can lower the tension and animosity towards the global North This involves the people getting helped directly, as opposed to the government working with MNCs, thus only benefiting themselves But, this doesnt happen at a large enough rate to make a difference Security: o Terrorism: We currently dont have great relations with them, and they are out to get us Demographic Issue: Elders in the Islamic South want to see America destroyed There is hostility and fear on both sides of it As their population grows, this could pose a threat to the U.S. as more anti-Western Civilization people are entering into the world We have the potential to change the future if we can show the younger generations what good we can do in the world This wont happen because they are taught from a young age to hate us through cartoons and their schooling...
