Jessica Gimbel 10/4/11 Sociology 120 Section 314 – Padma Priyadarshini News Reflection 1 My first article, “The Best Countries for Non-Mothers” examines countries most suitable for women based on their eligibility of economic success as a product of how they are able to imitate male gender roles. Nancy Folbre focuses on single women in poverty saying that they are detrimental to the lives of their children because they cannot financially support them. My second article, “Single-Sex Education is Assailed in Report,” argues that sex segregated education is disadvantageous and possibly damaging to the students involved. Writer Tamar Lewin states that single-sex education actually helps enforce sex stereotypes that force people into certain gender roles. My third article, “Engaging Parents” discusses the guidelines for suitable parent involvement in their child’s education. The article asks the question in regard to the quality of education, “Does the school have strong family and community ties?” (Engaging Parents, 2011).
