Susan Martinez June 18, 2009 Sociology of Marriage The Limits to Union: Same-Sex Marriage and the Politics of Civil Rights Jonathan Goldberg-Hiller, author of the book The Limits to Union: Same-Sex Marriage and the Politics of Civil Rights , talks about the rights that individuals in gay and lesbian relationships are denied, such as the right to marriage and all the privileges that go along with the recognition of a marital bond and contract. He focuses on the state of Hawaii, and their controversy over the passing of marriage equality law in the 1990s. Goldberg-Hiller begins the book by comparing the state of Vermont to Hawaii because they both passed an equality of marriage law, but were unable to keep it in tact because of neoconservative protest. Throughout the rest of the book Goldberg-Hiller shows the reasons of both parties, those for gay/lesbian marriage and against it, and helps to show the history of marriage culture to help justify gay marriage. In chapter five, Goldberg focuses on the history of marriage and the culture of Native Hawaii.
