Dear Peggy McIntosh, In reading your published article on white privilege, I laughed and thought to myself, “Well this isn’t true. No way, Jose!” But then it hit me, in critically analyzing my Hispanic ethnicity and hypothetically placing myself in particular situations, they tend to hold true. So I thought to myself again, “Well this is only true in areas of the country that are highly populated with white Americans. This would not hold up where I come from in the New York Tri-State Metropolitan Area.” And yet again I was stunned. Of course I would have more privilege in a diverse area, but how many towns, cities and areas in the country are really considered diverse? If I was in Detroit, Atlanta, Omaha, Denver or Portland, this would all remain as fact. The thought of white privilege is so mindboggling, even for someone who isn’t white, like myself. But it is fact. White privilege has been deeply rooted into our nation’s history. It stems into economic and financial success, schooling, and the “natural” social systems we have in play today. Our nation’s history is deeply rooted in inequality with favoritism towards the white man. Lui expresses in Chapter 1 of “The Color of Wealth”, how America’s history has helped benefit white people economically speaking and hindered those of color. For example, in the “Snapshot of the 1950s” Lui cites historical events geared towards white people. “Thanks to the GI Bill a large number of white male veterans entered college after World War II; many entered professions or got management jobs in the rapidly growing corporate sector. Returning black veterans didn’t get the same hero’s welcome as white vets, Most black World War II vets found the GI Bill’s educational benefits didn’t work, except at historically black colleges, which were swamped with far more applicants than they could accommodate.
