Elizabeth Sutka 2 November 2011 SOC 335 – A Chapter 6 pp. 162 – 173 1. Look over the changes between 1966 and 2006 in Table 6.1 and make some observations about the implications for the teaching profession. I think that it is a very positive thing that there was an increase in teachers from 1966 to 2006. This shows that not only are there more teachers, but there is more willingness to teach and that is key. The amount of female teachers increased only a little, and the amount of male teachers decreased only a little. I think that this may have to do with more women going to college and working, and more men feeling pressured to have more high-powered jobs in professions such as business. The median age went from 36 to 46. I think this has to do with the retirement age being higher than it used to be. Also, with the state of the economy and their salaries, it would be hard for teachers to retire earlier, so they are forced to keep working. I wasn’t surprised to see that there are more
