Media & Ideology (Ch 5) Ideology – common sense Is or should be Marx-working class Patterns ERA super bowl commercial Everyone should be able to vote for the union Unions aren’t meeting people’s needs Employee rights act An attempt to discredit unionization Marxism: employees themselves don’t want to be part of the union Those who would benefit from change think change would be bad for them Ideology: capitalism Make as much as you can, offer your workers as little as possible Ideological critiqe – how things are represented over time – to find patterns Modern ideological critiques – consumerism, gender, race, education There are some ideas that are so dominant that we don’t even think twice about if we accept them The Girls Next Door Consumerist ideology – materialist The more money, the better Rags-to-riches fairytale Dominant ideologies
