Week 4: Disability 17:54 Specific science: concept of disability Where do these ideas come from? How do they impact us? Every one of us is born in disability and leave the world as such. We are constantly trying to prove that we are not disabled. Culture as Disability Ray McDermott 1995 The Curb: EXPRESSIVE CULTURE Separates the road from a walking path Change in elevation, obstacle for people in general Fundamentally seen by people who have physical disabilities. If you are in a wheelchair  or crutches, you would notice it a lot more. Think of it in a different way: Source of literal cause of social isolation. Physically keeps certain people out of an area.  You cannot pass it if you are in a wheelchair. Debilitating infrastructure. It is infrastructure that causes disability. What creates  disability? Things like the curb. If you cannot pass it, you are marked as disabled.  Staircases, etc. Illustrates societies comfort with exclusion. We are okay with the fact that people cannot  pass this impediment. Three approaches to disability (first two common) Deprivation - Argues that: People develop at measurable different levels. We think of disability in this way. Once  we see disability in these terms, its hard to view it another way.  Poor performance marks one as underdeveloped. If you fail a test, if you can’t do  something, you are marked as unadvanced, disabled. (COLONIALISM,  ADVANCEMENT, think about this approach of viewing the world.) Socio-economic different is inevitable. Its okay for people who are poor and people who  are rich, because there are levels of disability. The individual is lacking. People start thinking that these people need help to survive,
