SOC 256 February 20, 2012 Assignment #5 Kate de Medeiros: Life Stories of Older Adults This topic was very interesting to learn about. I have never thought that there was symbolism behind storytelling, but after Kate de Medeiros presented us the information she found from her own experiences, I realized there is much more to storytelling than the act alone. Kate initially talked about her mother and the lack of excitement she had in storytelling. Her mother did not believe that her stories were interesting for others to hear. She did not want to write about herself because she simply thought people would be bored. Kate thought the reason behind this may be that her mother only thought of bad memories. Many memorable events we have in our lives tend to either be unbelievably amazing or unbelievably tragic. Her mother dealt with losing her first child and other events that she may not want to share. Kate explained that 1 st person sometimes makes one feel vulnerable.
