Borderline Personality Disorder Tshona Corbin What it is: Also called ambulatory schizophrenia, as-if personality, pseudoneurotic schizophrenia, and psychotic character disorder. ICD-10 uses the term emotionally unstable personality disorder. Presents with unstable affect, mood, behavior, object relations, and self-image. Some may show shortened REM and sleep continuity disturbances, and abnormal thyrotropin-releasing hormone results. Cause/Incidence: Thought to be present in 1-2% of the population, with women:men 2:1. There is an increased prevalence of first-degree relatives with major depressive disorder, alcohol use, and substance abuse. Clinical Presentation: Almost always appear in a state of crisis Mood swings are common-argumentative one minute, then depressed, then have no feelings at all Micropsychotic episodes-short lived, not a full psychotic break May be fleeting or even doubtful that it occurred Highly unpredictable, with a pattern of self-destructive acts
