Learning Issue: Etiology of UMN and LMN disorders-MH Disorders of Upper Motor Neurons o Primary Lateral Sclerosis It is a rare UMN disease variant of ALS cases o Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia Genetic heterogeneous group of disorders o Human T-Lymphotropic Virus Type 1–Associated Myelopathy or Tropical Spastic Paraparesis o Adrenomyeloneuropathy X-linked recessive disorder caused by mutations in the ABCD1 gene on chromosome Xq28 that encodes a ubiquitously expressed integral membrane peroxismal adenosine triphosphate-binding cassette transporter protein. o Plant Excitotoxins Lathyrism: Caused by long term ingestion of flour made from the drought resistant chickling pea. Konzo: Chronic ingestion of neurotoxin derived from flour made from cassava roots that have not been soaked for sufficient time. Disorders of Lower Motor Neurons o Acute Poliomyelitis Caused by poliovirus o Postpolio Syndrome/Progressive Postpoliomyelitis Muscular Atrophy Cause not established
