PTSD Alyssa Crozier General info PTSD: posttraumatic stress disorder Development of symptoms after exposure to traumatic life events Reaction to experience is with fear, helplessness, reliving the event, and avoidance of reminders Symptoms last for more than a month after the event, significantly affect important areas of life (family/work/etc.) May also have depression, anxiety, and cognitive difficulties (poor concentration) Acute stress disorder – similar to PTSD but occurs within 4 weeks of the event and remits within 2 days – 4 weeks Common causes of PTSD War Torture Natural catastrophes Assault/rape Serious accidents (cars or burning buildings) Common types Civil war: “Irritable heart” Fatigue, SOB, palpitations, headache, diaphoresis, dizziness, insomnia/disturbed sleep, syncope World War I: “Effort syndrome” Fatigue, SOB, palpitations, headache, diaphoresis, dizziness, insomnia/disturbed sleep, syncope, difficulty concentrating World War II: “Combat stress reaction” Fatigue, SOB, palpitations, headache, diaphoresis, dizziness, insomnia/disturbed sleep, syncope, difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness Vietnam War: “Posttraumatic stress disorder” Fatigue, SOB, palpitations, headache, dizziness, insomnia/disturbed sleep, difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness, muscle/joint pain Gulf War: “Gulf War Syndrome” Fatigue, SOB, palpitations, headache, muscle/joint pain, disturbed sleep/insomnia, difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness Epidemiology Lifetime incidence: 9-15% High risk individual lifetime incidence: ranges from 5-75% Most likely to occur in people who are single, divorced, widowed, socially withdrawn, or of low socioeconomic level
