Seizure Disorders Overview – Alyssa Seizures and Epilepsy: Definition Seizure: episode of abnormally synchronized and high-frequency firing of neurons in the brain – results in abnormal behavior or experience of the individual Can occur in epilepsy, electrolyte abnormalities, alcohol withdrawal, electroshock therapy, toxins, etc. Lifetime risk of having a single seizure: 10-15% of population Epilepsy: disorder in which there is a tendency to have recurrent unprovoked seizures Seizure is a symptom of abnormal brain dysfunction Can be caused by genetic, structural, metabolic, or other abnormalities Affects 1% of the population Classification: International League Against Epilepsy Partial (focal, local) seizures A. Simple Partial seizures a. With motor signs b. With somatosensory or special sensory symptoms c. With autonomic symptoms or signs d. With psychic symptoms B. Complex partial seizures a. Simple partial onset followed by impairment of consciousness b. With impairment of consciousness at onset C. Partial seizures evolving to secondarily generalized seizures a. Simple partial seizures evolving to generalized seizures b. Complex partial seizures evolving to generalized seizures c. Simple partial seizures evolving to complex partial seizures evolving to generalized seizures Generalized Seizures A. Absence seizures a. Typical absence (petit mal) b. Atypical absence B. Myoclonic seizures C. Clonic seizures D. Tonic seizures E. Tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizures F. Atonic seizures Unclassified epileptic seizures Partial Seizures (focal, local) Abnormal paroxysmal electrical activity occurs in a localized region of the brain Generalized seizures Abnormal electrical discharge involves the entire brain Secondarily Generalized When a seizure begins as a partial seizure but spreads to become a generalized seizure
