Malaria  “Lions aren’t the only thing this breed can hunt” Definition Organism: Plasmodium protozoa (parasitic protist) 5 main culprits (species): P. falciparum Causes severe disease, often drug resistant, predominant form in Africa P. vivax Less severe disease, but does have the ability to remain DORMANT in the liver, unaffected by drug treatments, & can reactivate causing disease relapses P. ovale Rare, but also has DROMANT phase P. malariae Rare P. knowlesi Southeast Asia Vector: Anopheles mosquito Patho: Sporozoites are transmitted with mosquito bites & make their way to the liver Hepatocyte infection ensues = asymptomatic liver infection Merozoites are produced, released into the blood, & infect erythrocytes Asexual erythrocytic infection occurs = symptomatic disease Epidemiology US: Not any more - big in the 19th & 20th Centuries but then we killed all that shit with our excessive use of harmful chemicals (DDT) Real question: malaria or cancer - which is worse?
