Learning Issue: Hydroxychloroquine side effects and monitoring-MH Monitoring parameters o CBC o Ophthalmologic exam Pregnancy o In general, avoid the use of hydroxychloroquine during pregnancy. If the physician determines that the benefit outweighs the possible hazard, hydroxychloroquine may be used for the suppression or treatment of malaria. Hydroxychloroquine may also be appropriate for pregnancies complicated by lupus. Adverse reactions o Can cause ocular toxicity, but incidence of corneal changed and visual side effects appear to be lower with hydroxchloroquine than with cholorquine o Corneal changes such as transient edema, punctate to lineal opacities, and decreased corneal sensitivity are fairly common and are reversible; symptoms may include blurred vision, halos around lights, and photophobia. o Blurred vision can also result from impaired accommodation o Visual field deficits such as pericentral or paracentral scotoma, central scotoma with decreased visual acuity, rarely field constriction, or abnormal vision color are
