Learning Issue: Prednisone side effects and monitoring-MH Prednisone: Monitoring parameters o Blood glucose o PFTs o Serum potassium Pregnancy o Complications including cleft palate, still birth, and premature abortion have been reported when corticosteroids were administered during pregnancy. If these drugs must be used during pregnancy, the potential risks should be discussed with the patient. Babies born to women receiving large doses of corticosteroids during pregnancy should be monitored for signs of adrenal insufficiency and appropriate therapy initiated, if necessary. Prednisone is classified as FDA pregnancy risk category C but cortisone is classified as pregnancy category D. Adverse reactions o Musculoskeletal: Myalgia, muscle wasting, and muscle weakness o Impaired wound healing o Osteoporosis o Bone fractures o Impaired calcium metabolism leading to decreased synthesis of osteoblasts; malabsorption in the gut and nephron, and reduction of sex hormone o Can mask infections, and should be avoided in acute infections
