CHAPTER 18: Wildlife and Rangelands Wildlife management on Rangelands: Rangelands include about 47% of the earth's land area. These lands are characteristically unsuited for cultivation and instead produce forage for livestock and forage and habitat for wildlife. Rangelands are also identified with watersheds, timber production, mineral development, energy extraction, recreation and etc. These lands are characteristically unsuited for cultivation and instead produce forage for livestock and forage and habita t for wildlife. 1) Range managements is: a) A discipline integrating biological, physical, and social sciences (Stoddart et al. 1975). b) A biological science because it deals with interactions between vegetation and animals. c) A physical science because of the importance of topography, climate, soil and water on rangelands. d) A social science because of the demands people place on the goods and services produced or present on rangelands. Too often, Range Management is considered as just management of livestock grazing. 2) Wildlife management on rangelands: The objectives and practices of the two disciplines may be in conflict over particular issues but the interests of both disciplines are best served, on Public lands, where objectives reflect the
