Liu Bang died in 195 B.C.- his son became emperor in name only Real ruler was his mother, Empress Lü- she outlived her son Retained control of the throne by naming her babies as emperors (they were too young to rule, so she retained control) Traditionally, emperor chose favorite wife to bear heirs to the throne. The women and their families competed fiercly!
