-dependence on the Nile. Annual flood deposits silt in the soil, making it fertile for growing, particularly in the Delta. - two separate regions, Upper Egypt (south) and Lower Egypt (north), united by King Narmer c. 3000 BCE. -desire for stability reflected in art and religion. Official state- sponsored religion, upper class integrated into religious structure, Pharaoh worshipped as god. -art is regimented. Conventions appear early on, and persist with little change for over 3,000 years. More emphasis on conceptual principles, less interest in naturalism. -most of the remaining art is funerary, meaning that most of our knowledge is related to religions rituals relating to death
