Employers should make sure that ethics come before talents I’d like to start with a true story. In 1995, two aspiring young ladies were excited receive their job offers at downtown Toronto. The first one seemed pretty capable, for she always managed to get her tasks done ahead of time. The other, however, knew nothing but work hard in silent, often overtime. Sure enough, the first employee got promoted within six months, but it was not long before her boss found out she had been boasting about her task results, and worse still, she was accused of embezzlement. The second one, on contrary, slowly built her credibility among colleagues as well as made small contributions to the firm. Now, suppose you were the employer at that time, whom would you’ve chosen in the first place? This led to my topic today: employers should value ethics more than talents. Of course, on condition that certain level of competence is achieved. There are three reasons behind it. First, ethical employees can better promote interest of the firm, second, they are valuable to a high ethical culture, and third, they are the foundation of sustainability. Let’s first consider how ethics work towards promoting interest of the firm.
