The New Deal Political Realignment, 1932-140 How the New Deal Political transformed national politics and the Democratic Party Democrats and Republicans become to two official major party Federal gov’t takes on responsibility of taking care of welfare of American ppl Realignment-one party moving away and getting changed for the long term Realignment, Phase 1: Election of 1932 Bloc of voters switches parties White working class-Hoover and Republicans took blame for poor economy Important: White, blue-collar working class led first phase of realignment Conversion or mobilization? Most likely mobilization. White working class just felt little connection to politics in 20’s Flamming in LA County looked at # of registered Republicans vs. number of Democrats. Number of Republican really didn’t go down much, but there was a huge surge in the number of voters and in 1932 Democrat number shoots up and stays up. This means Mobilization! Not conversion. Realignment, Phase 2: The Election of 1936
