Lecture 9/1 1890:’s the Crisis Decade Disfranchisement “Jim Crow” segregation Laws- racist state policies to African Americans Lynching (mob rule) Northern apathy, Northern racism Decide to let southern whites do whatever they want basically Republican party switches , reforms Result #1: “second class” citizenship for blacks even though it is against Constitution Result #2: Republican party disappears in the South aka The “Solid South” No opposition to Democratic party; all white U.S. Supreme Court Rulings U.S. v. Harris , 1883 (13 th amendment): Ku Klux Case , was a case in which the Supreme Court of the United States which held that it was unconstitutional for the federal government to penalize crimes such as assault and murder. It declared that the local governments have the power to penalize these crimes. Under cut part of 13 th amendment.
