- 1820 - Missouri Compromise – This was an agreement passed in 1820 between the pro- slavery and anti-slavery factions in the United States congress, involving primarily the regulation of slavery in the western territories. It prohibited slavery in the former Louisiana Territory north of the parallel 36 degrees 30’ north except within the boundaries of the proposed state of Missouri. - July 20, 1848 - 1 st Women’s Rights Convention – Also called the Seneca Falls Convention, it was an early and influential women’s rights convention held in Seneca Falls, New York. The convention was seen by some of its contemporaries, including featured speaker Mott, as but a single step in the continuing effort by women to gain for themselves a greater proportion of social, civil, and moral rights, but it was viewed by others as a revolutionary beginning to the struggle by women for complete equality with men. - 1852 - Uncle Tom’s Cabin – This is an anti-slavery novel by American author Harriet Beecher Stowe. The novel “helped lay the groundwork for the Civil War”, according to Will Kaufman. - 1861 - Civil War Begins – This was a war fought in the United States of America. In response to the election of Abraham Lincoln as President of the United States, 11 southern slave states declared their secession from the U.S. and formed the Confederate States of America; the other 25 states, which were together called the Union, supported the federal government and Lincoln’s decision to abolish slavery. - January 1, 1863 - Emancipation Proclamation – An executive order issued by United States President Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War using his war powers. It proclaimed the freedom of slaves in the ten states then in rebellion, thus applying to 3.1
