What is it and what does it do? The term  BIOS  is an acronym that stands  for Basic Input/Output System. The BIOS resides in ROM !!, so its  contents don’t vanish each time you turn  off your PC the BIOS is a set of operating instructions

Motherboard BIOS The BIOS – A collection of programs embedded in one or more chips. It is the first thing loaded when you start your computer. The BIOS in most PCs has four main functions: - POST (power on self test) . POST tests your computer's processor, memory, chipset, video adapter, disk controllers, disk drives, keyboard, and other crucial components. - Setup . System configuration and setup program. Usually menu driven. Activated by pressing a special key during the POST and enabling configuration of motherboard and chipset settings and date and time, passwords, disk drives, and other basic settings. - Bootstrap / driver loader . Looks for a valid master boot record (MBR). The master boot sector program continues the boot process, loads an operating system boot sector, which then loads the operating system core files and device drivers. - IO (input/output) . A collection of actual drivers used to act as a basic interface between operating system and hardware when the system is booted and running . This enables continuous communication between the OS and the hardware platform.

The BIOS in a PC comes from these four sources: - Motherboard ROM This contains generic drivers for basic system components like keyboard, floppy drive, hard drive, serial and parallel ports. For example, we could not boot from a hard disk if the drivers for that device still needed to be loaded into RAM from it. We require the most basic hardware component drivers to be loaded very early into the boot process Adapter Card ROM The motherboard ROM is designed to scan the expansion slots looking for adapter cards with ROMs on them. If a card (such as a video card) is found with a ROM on it, it is executed during the initial system startup before the system begins to load the operating system from the hard disk. -
