ENGR 13200 – Fall 2011 Activities 1-3 Class 1b In Class Activities : Completed in-class activity documents must be uploaded to your Instructor’s Blackboard ICA# Dropbox prior to the next class . All uploads must be done individually even if you worked with a partner. Partner names should appear in all documents that were worked with one or more partners. Completion of activities is part of the in-class participation grade and submissions may be subject to grading. Class1b : Upload c1b_ups_pkgvol.m , c1b_trigfuncplot.m , and c1b_stats.m to Blackboard as instructed above. Activity 1 - Using Vectors to Create a Plot I (Estimated Time: 20 minutes) Through this exercise you will learn how to use the plot command in MATLAB. UPS (United Parcel Service) has several rules regarding the maximum volume of a package that it will ship. This script will determine the maximum volume of a package that UPS will ship based upon the size and weight restrictions described at http://www.ups.com/content/us/en/resources/ship/packaging/weight_size.html . 1. Open script_header_template.m in the MATLAB editor and re-save as c1b_ups_pkgvol.m . 2. Edit the comments in the script header as appropriate. 3. Under the INPUTS Section, assign a value for the maximum allowable package size UPS will ship. max_size = 200; % maximum girth (inches) 4. Under the INPUTS Section, assign package lengths that vary from 35 inches to 105 inches using 10-inch increments. package_length = [35:5:105]; % package length (inches) 5. Under the CALCULATIONS Section, calculate the maximum dimension for a side assuming that the width and height of the package are equal (square cross-section) and imposes the UPS size constraint. package_side = (max_size – package_length)./4;
