COM 126 Communications and the Media Course Information: This course is a study of media history and theory with an emphasis on the implications and impact of mass messages on meaning, culture, and society. Topics, Objectives, and Assignments: Module 1: Topic and Objectives The Beginnings of Mass Media Theory Explain an application of Plato's Allegory of the Cave . Confirm the purpose of developing theories to understand the world. Apply characteristics of stimulus-response theories in general to the development of a simple cause and effect theory based on a phenomenon personally observed. Recognize how the two-step flow theory changed the perception of the effects of mediated messages. Module 1: Assignments Plato's Cave 1) Complete an Internet search on "Plato's Cave" or "Allegory of the Cave" or "Cave of Shadows." Look for an article that provides an application of the story that resonates with you, for example, how Plato's story was used to explain illusion, reality, truth, or some other application. Be sure to include the following in an essay (500-750 words): a) The article's Web site (URL). b) An explanation as to why you chose this particular application of Plato's idea and whether

Current Issues Presentation 1) Utilizing the skills and theories learned in Module 1, create a PowerPoint presentation (10-12 slides including the title and reference slide) that discusses a historical media issue. This issue must have been in the press prior to five years ago. Discuss positive and negative effects caused by the issue. 2) The PowerPoint presentation should include images. Use the speaker's notes for the bulk of the text. 3) While GCU style format is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected and in-text citations and references should be presented using GCU documentation guidelines, which can be found in the GCU Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center Submit the assignment to the instructor by the end of Module 1.
