Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory (ELT) Video Script In this video, we’re going to take a brief look at the Four Stages of Kolb’s Experiential Learning Cycle. In order to do well in this course, it’s important that you have a solid understanding of each stage, as you will use them to write both your 5-to-7-page draft (due in Module 6 of this course) and your final 10- or 20- page paper, which should be submitted promptly after the course ends. David A. Kolb, the originator of the Experiential Learning Cycle, is a renowned educational theorist and Professor of Organizational Behavior at Case Western Reserve University. His theory is based on the belief that life offers numerous learning opportunities for individuals who understand how learning occurs. The four stages of his learning model are: Concrete Experience Observations and Reflections Formation of Generalizations Application in New Situations These might sound a little intimidating, but in fact the Kolb Model is quite easy to understand. Let’s first look at each of the stages in turn. Stage One: Concrete Experiences . As the name suggests, in this stage of your paper you simply describe a significant event or period in your life. This might be a job you have had, a challenge you have overcome, time spent living overseas, raising a child, or any number of other experiences. One good way to approach this stage of your paper is to think of yourself as a reporter answering the questions who, what, when, where, why, and how . For example, what did you do? When and where did you do it? Who was involved besides yourself? How did you feel about what you did? Stage Two: Observations and Reflections
