Through The Union of Language and Communication By: Poojan Patel Expository Writing 10/31/11 Hilary Haakenson A community consists of any living species, similar and dissimilar, successfully interacting and working together under the same environment. A language is a choice of a personal expression through which one can communicate thoughts. Language and community are interdependent in almost any scenario. Communities often have one or more languages through which they can communicate. Languages act as a unifier that builds communities as there are many people that speak particular languages. If something lacks communication then it will also lack an effective language. In Charles Siebert’s, “An Elephant Crackup?” there is very little correlation between language and community in the space that humans and elephants share. As a result, there is a greater power that overbears people and elephants that live in a certain parts of Africa. Siebert believes that if humans develop more respect for elephants it would help understand them better because communication is about understanding the other party. In

Nafisi’s, “Selections from Reading Lolita in Tehran,” there is a very little sense of community in her world because the greater is oppressing the people. She believes that just because everyone speaks the same language does not mean that there will be effective communication. In both texts, there is a greater force that overpowers a weaker force. Through communication and language we can achieve a greater understanding of each other, and are able to work together with those that share a space with us. Effective communication makes it possible for people within a defined area to coexist without having a greater power bring them down. In Nafisi’s world the greater power is the oppressive government of Iran. This greater power does everything that it can to make sure that the weak are kept in check. Many Iranians, including Nafisi, want to find an escape from this oppressive regime which they are forced to live under. If there was more effective communication among the citizens then the Iranian government would not feel so overbearing. There was no sense of unity among the weak and that is why they are stuck in the same position that they are in currently. In particular, it was the women in Iranian society that were rendered powerless through the acts of the greater power. “Female students were being penalized for running up the stairs when they were late for classes, for laughing in the hallways, for talking to members of the opposite sex” (Nafisi,252). These young women were treated as if they were subhuman. The regime tries on a consistent basis to bring them down and to keep them from
