Poojan Patel 4/18/09 English 2 Ms. Angelos The Grapes of Wrath The Grapes of wrath is the story of the Joads. The Joads live in Oklahoma during the Dust Bowl, which happened in the 1930’s. The Dust Bowl was an event where states in the Midwest experience severe dust storms. These dust storms ruin homes, crops and the livelihoods of the farmers. After Muley Grave’s tractor runs down their house the Joads live at Uncle John’s house and plan on going to California. Their journey to and in California is not an easy one and they experience many hardships. These hardships allow the characters to grow and mature. Tom Joad changes throughout the novel. At the beginning he is very violent but as the story progresses he fights back with his actions and words rather than violence. At the beginning Tom is a very violent character. He is sentenced to seven years at the McAlester prison for killing a man with a shovel. He is on parole after serving four years at McAlester. Tom is very violent at this point in the novel. He does not understand that violence will get him nowhere. “I’d do what I done---again,” said Tom. “I killed a guy in a fight. We was drunk at a dance. He got a knife in me, an’ I killed him with a shovel that was layin’ there. Knocked his head plumb to squash.”(25)
