We’ve learned to use tener to express possession and to say what we have to do. The verb tener Tengo  m uc ho s   a m ig o s . I have a lot of friends. Tienes que  a s is tir a   c la s e . You have to attend class. There are other common expressions that use tener where English uses the verb to be . Note that many of these refer to things we might feel, such as hunger, thirst, cold, etc. ¿ Tienes  ha m b re ? Are you hungry? No , pe ro   tengo  frío . No, but I’m cold. Tenemos  pris a . We’re in a hurry. Let’s look at some illustrations of these expressions.
