Love Life: Week 1 (Noise) I. Intro a. Looking at 1 Corinthians 13 b. All of you have seen this movie: there’s a girl (attractive, smart), has two guys that are in love with her, one guy has everything going for him (car, money, looks, funny) but as the film goes on you kind of find one little character flaw in him, or there’s something there that isn’t right; 2 nd guy has been in love with her since they were little kids, but he’s never told her how he really feels, finally the time comes and he tells her and she’s got this tough decision to make, finally she chooses who she’s been friends with since she was a kid, this movie has been made several times c. Clip from the office (Dwight gets fired, him and Michael clip) d. We love the world in the same way sometimes, in order for us to get ahead, in order for us to fill our obligations, to feel good about ourselves d.i. Problem is sometimes people see right through it e. Begins chapter 13 with the difference between spiritual giftedness and spiritual maturity e.i. Corinth had many gifts but couldn’t translate their spiritual gifts into spiritual maturity, could have done amazing things, but that translation couldn’t happen e.ii. The way you can measure your spiritual maturity is your depths of love for God and others e.iii. He tells them to begin evaluating their love life e.iv. Easy to get locked into doing things for God, without using our hearts e.iv.1. But some of us; we’ve never learned how to fully give our entire hearts to others f. Last verse in chapter 12: “now I will show you the most excellent way” f.i. Paul says I’m going to show you the right way to use your spiritual gifts, in a mature the way that loves the world f.ii. Now this passage we normally take as like a love between a guy and a girl f.ii.1. But in context here it was used on how to use your spiritual gifts in a mature way that will please God g. Corinth was facing all kinds of different things g.i. People were jealous of other peoples gifts g.i.1. Caused a lot of arguments g.i.2. 1 Corinthians 12:4-6 g.ii. People could not work together g.ii.1. All were gifted, wouldn’t work as a team g.ii.2. 1 Corinthians 12:12 g.ii.3. Goes on to give the body of Christ analogy g.iii. People had lost their concern for others g.iii.1. 1 Corinthians 12:25-26 g.iv. They’d begun to use their gifts as a way to earn appreciation g.iv.1. 1 corinthians 13:1-3 g.iv.2. Talks about using your gifts in amazing ways, but it means nothing if it isn’t done in love
