Test 2 Key Terms: Baroque style - A pluralistic style in the arts that exhibited ornateness, emotionalism, etc. Systematic Rationalism - An attempt to provide an unchanging fabric to life whose relevance to particulars could be deduced by inquiry. Counter-Reformation - Internal reform within the Roman Catholic Church based on the desire for spiritual regeneration (mid 16th - early 17th centuries) Absolutism - Government with power vested in an absolute monarch Academicism - The attempt of a government to control and arbitrate art and cultural taste. Tenebrism - Use of extreme chiaroscuro where shadows are the dominating feature Opera - A type of music drama Enlightenment - A faith in science, progress, human reason, and human rights arising from natural law Enlightened despotism - Rule by an “absolute” monarch who holds “enlightened” views on the relationship between ruler and subjects Philosophes - Writers who culled thought from great books and translated it into accessible terms.
