Brianna Haynes Dr. Rahe Genetics Fall 2010 Chaperon Proteins or Molecular Chaperones Proteins are one of the four building blocks of life; they are one of the more important molecules in a cell because they are involved virtually in all cellular functions. Each protein made by the body has a specific function, and function is determined by the shape of the protein. The shape of a protein is determined by the amount of folds the protein has, this folding that occurs within the cell requires molecular chaperones. For a long time chaperon proteins have played a significant role in the cell cycle of not only eukaryotes but also in virus’ from bacteriophages. Many polypeptides can self-assemble into functional structures while others require the presence of additional proteins or chaperones (chaperon proteins) that are not compounds of the final structure. Chaperon proteins belong in the class of hsp70 and hsp60 or chaperonin classes, and they function to stabilize unfolded or partially folded polypeptides to prevent aggregation and to
