Brianna Haynes Intro. PSY Spring 2010 10 am class The studies done by Ivan Pavlov have significantly changed the way we look at classical conditioning when learning psychology. Ivan Pavlov was born in Russia and began his schooling at the Ryazan Ecclesiastical Seminary, but soon withdrew from the school and started his education at the University of Saint Petersburg receiving his doctorate in 1879 .The interesting thing about Pavlov’s studies is that he did not begin his work with dogs with classical conditioning; he began his work studying the gastric functions of dogs. When Pavlov was doing his gastric studies, he noticed that the dogs tended to produce saliva before the food was given to them; he began to become curious about this correlation of

Unformatted text preview: events. Ivan Pavlov immediately changed his focus to the pre-salivation and why the dogs were doing this. He constructed a long series of experiments that define what we now know as conditioning in terms of psychology. Pavlov was highly regarded by the Soviet government and he was able to continue his work until he was very old, unlike many other Russian researchers who were reprimanded for a lot of their chosen fields of study. When the Russian persecutions were going on, he wrote many letters disagreeing with leaders due to his well-respected status with the government. After death, Ivan Pavlov’s laboratory was preserved in Saint Petersburg as a museum....
