C++ History of C C was created by Dennis Ritchie in 1972 in Bell Labs The main difference between basic research and technology: time of profit return C was used to implement the UNIX OS C made UNIX easy to port to other machines 98% in C 2% in assembly (only need to rewrite this part to migrate to other machine) Linux is written in C Most of the libraries (low level) that need speed are written in C, Graphics (OpenGL), MP3 decoders, math libraries are also written in C Java runs on top of the JVM and the JVM is written in C
