February 7 American Political Party I. The two party system A. Two parties: Republican or Democrat A.a. Israel has two main parties and a dozen sub parties A.b. Italy 74 parties A.c. Britain several main parties B. Why does a big country like America have two parties? B.a. We have a two party system mainly because we have a single member district B.a.i. Single member district system – an electoral district or constituency having a single representative in a legislative body rather than two or more B.a.i.a. forces countries have a two party system B.a.i.b.Only one representative is elected. Can’t get 20% B.a.i.c. Must combine or you will lose B.b. Other countries have proportional Representation system in which how many population of party that’s how many representatives there are. B.b.i. Have a multiparty system B.b.ii. No incentive to combine; no reward B.b.iii. Sub parties combine and combine and combine until they get 50% + 1 so that they can win. They unknowingly made a two party system B.c. Our single member district system has created and maintained a two party system. System X B.d. People try to make a third party system but they never win B.e. Two party system is held in place by our electoral system.
