Week 3 - Assignment 1 Power and Influence Dustin Taylor Chadron State College MGMT 620 High Performance Leadership 1. Are power and influence the same within the context of situational leadership? Why or why not? When people hear “power”, they automatically think something negative. I don't agree. I think that power and influence are both variations of ways to get people to accomplish things. If the leader can use positivity to influence the followers to do what needs to be done, that's great. If not, he may need to demonstrate his power and show the followers that he is the leader. If they don't respond to his/her power, then negative consequences may occur. 2. Present a vignette of both your positive and negative power and/or influence situational case studies. I chose to use Jeff Bezos, the founder and CEO of Amazon.com as an example of positive leadership within an organization. Kenneth Lay, the CEO of Enron will be the example of leadership used in a negative manner. a. What types of power or influence are being used? Jeff Bezos Expert power – After founding Amazon.com and turning it into the webs biggest retailer, it's apparent that Jeff knows his stuff.
