As a leader, what are your thoughts regarding using power and influence to maximize organizational performance? Disclaimer: The thoughts and views expressed in this post are strictly the views of the author. You probably won't agree. But that's why I'm me, and you're you. As a leader, I not only think you can use power and influence, I think you should use it to maximize the performance of your organization. Merriam-Webster defines power as “possession of control, authority, or influence over others.” Influence is defined as “the act or power of producing an effect without apparent exertion of force or direct exercise of command.” While influence and power are closely related, the difference seems to boil down to “exertion of force.” It would be great if we all lived in a world where managers and leaders could influence their followers to always get the best they

Unformatted text preview: can out of them. Unfortunately, many people don't always do what they should do without seemingly being forced to do so. For example, I tend to think I'm a great driver. I think I could drive 100 miles per hour on the highway without causing accidents. Do I drive 100 miles an hour? No. Is it because of the influence caused by the commercials I see on TV from the Highway Patrol or Sheriff's Departments? Nope. I don't drive 100 miles an hour because they have power over me. They have the power to write me tickets or take me to jail. I've been to jail numerous times. I didn't like it. Do I resent them or dislike them in any way because of this power? No. It just is what it is. Every organization has people with power.
