Arthur M. Schlesinger o Father conducted a poll results brought on controversy and interest o 1996 Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr. was asked to replicate the poll o Schlesinger polls asked historians to rate on a scale form Great, Near Great, Average, Below Average, and Failure Henry Harrison and James A. Garfield were not included because they died soon after taking office o Standard was not lifetime achievement but performance in the White House o Scholars decided presidential performance for themselves o some presidents feel historians and polls cannot reflect their presidency since Historians may be biased People who have not been president do not know what the experience is really like o Schlesinger Sr. believed only presidents knew the pressure and alternatives they faces, and if people didn’t know that how could they judge performance. Was as he saw it, made it easier for a president to achieve greatness o For Kennedy the measure of presidential success was evident in concrete accomplishments o President who raised the consciousness of the nation without achieving objectives
