09-14-09 History notes I. The origins of American slavery: II. Anthony Johnson a. African b. Arrives in the chesapeak in 1621 c. First Africans arrive in 1619 d. Put to work growing tobacco e. There is poor environmental conditions f. Freedom status unclear. Some called him a slave, others called him a servant g. He is lucky because he survives, and finds himself a wife (Mary). Stayed married for more than 14 years. They produce 4 children that survive to adulthood h. 1630’s Johnson acquires his freedom thru self purchase. It gives him the right to grow his own tobacco so he could pay for his freedom and his wife’s freedom. i. By 1640’s Johnson owns a plantation of his own. At least 250 acres. Children help work but he also owns white indentured servants and at least one African slave. j. In this society wealth was all that mattered. k. By the 1660’s that fluidity had begun to change III. Colonial fluidity a. Each region has slavery b. Prominent in south. Mostly due to many cash crops.
