Notes World War II Can be called the “war without mercy” June 1941 – Germans break the non-aggression pact with the soviets o This concerns the US about German expansion further into the West o Germany now has to fight on two fronts West and East Europe o This was the ultimate downfall of Germany in WWII Japan in WWII Japan has been expanding power throughout Asia Through this, they threaten the weak British colonies in India US thus embargoes selling oil to Japan as well as other resources (80% of Japan’s oil supply came from the US) o Japan’s assets (money) in US banks are also frozen Japan thus wants to secure Southeast Asia for the oil supplies located there, but also wants to avoid a war with US wants to negotiate for SE Asia (i.e., Philippines) Japan attacks Pearl Harbor o Destroys 8 US battleships, kills 2400 soldiers o Japan uses aircraft carriers (not a new invention, but the Japanese were the best) Germany vs. US Hitler declares war on the US
