Notes – Vietnam Containment Doctrine Theory that we need to “contain” communism like a disease we need to surround the infection and keep it from spreading JFK says Americans will do anything for freedom around the world Viet Minh Nationalist group in Vietnam proclaiming Vietnamese independence (September 2, 1945) o Possibly communist (have some ideals) Led by Ho Chi Minh educated man with communist ties US policy makers argued that Viet Minh were a communist group and were trying to take over both Vietnam as well as surrounding countries Why Vietnam? FDR wanted the end of “imperial nations” (nations with colonies) European nations after WWII claim that they will become communist due to the poor state of things o The only way to avoid this is for them to reclaim their lost colonies Anti-communism in the US takes precedence over our belief in independence Key Reasons: o US props up the French in Vietnam (situation simply escalates) o Containment policy support US involvement
