ARCHITECTURAL HISTORY II LECTURE 2 Filippo Brunelleschi – commissioned to build the great dome, exterior shell and interior shell reduced overall weight with honeycombed structure inside and horizontal levels, lantern at top is very heavy and serves as keystone for the dome o Florence Cathedral [ aka “Duomo”] – not a “true” Renaissance building because of pointed dome o Arnolfo di Cambio – produced original plan for cathedral o Francesco Talenti – takes over job after Cambio dies, decides his plan was not big enough and increases the size of the Florence Cathedral Campanile – bell tower at Florence Cathedral o Giotto – respected painter who became the architect of the bell tower, made from marble and depicts elements of the middle ages (crenellations) Foundling Hospital [Hospital of the Innocents] – also commissioned by Brunelleschi, ideal depiction of the nature of the Renaissance o
