Due 5:00 PMMonday, 4/5/99 EE 695A Homework No. 4 Spring 1999 Colors along the achromatic axis are of special interest in design of systems for good color reproduction. The next two problems deal with two different aspects of the achromatic axis. 1. Good color reproduction requires that neutral colors remain neutral. Suppose that E = 3 is taken as the maximum satisfactory deviation from the achromatic axis in L * a * b * . a. Derive expressions for the coordinates Yxy in terms of the coordinates L * a * b * . b. For fixed L * = 10,30,50,70,90, plot the locus of points in the xy chromaticity diagram corresponding to a circle of radius a ( 29 2 + b ( 29 2 = 3. 2. One method that is sometimes used for performing color transformations between the color spaces of two devices with differing gamuts is to align the achromatic axes. Suppose we do this in XYZ. (The same ideas would apply in any color space.) The method is illustrated in the figure below which shows the gamuts of the two devices. B
