8/29/06 Athens starts to fall apart People of Athens blames Socrates for the downfall of Athens Socrates blames the sophists and says the sophists created ochlocracy (mob rule) Philosophers blame the Sophists Philosopher – lover of wisdom Sophists – wise man Difference = philosophers seek wisdom; sophists believe they are wisdom Sophists hang out in Athens and tell young people how to be wise. They not only claim to be knowledge, they believe they can teach knowledge. o Sophist phrase: “Man is the measure” o Philosopher’s phrase: “God is the measure” Popular belief in Athens is that power (or man) makes the decisions o Athenians begin to lose touch with democracy and their gods o Athens falls Socrates – o Socratic ignorance: we can’t have knowledge Plato – o Since Socrates never wrote a word, Plato decided to write about Socrates and then complaining about the sophists. o Writes “The Republic” “They talk to one another about ‘men,’ ‘women,’ ‘trees,’ or ‘horses,’ they are referring to these shadows.
