Ethnography as a unique research strategy Participant Observation o A lot of hanging out o Use field notes to capture different types of observations o Direct, firsthand observation of behavior o Wide ranging; can be minute details uninteresting to those who you study Culture Shock o Feeling of alienation from exposure to new culture and field site o Gives a sense of uneasiness o Anthropologists deal with these regularly o Eventually it is overcome Rapport o Friendly working relationship with people o Good ethnography requires rapport o Build relationship based on trust Time, sensitivity, and self awareness are all very important. o Questionnaire – short discreet questions that are to the point to get direct answers o Learning language ( could be a foreign language or different version of your native tongue o Interview schedule – open ended questions; can get broad answers Genealogical Method o Established technique to understand social relationships and reconstruct history o Can be very informative in different ways o o An example: Tracing one’s lineage Key Informants (Cultural Consultants)
