Why did kids get smuggled across border? -Kids wanted to support families by working in America -families are split between US and mexico - want to reunite with each other because love of family vanishes otherwise -Poorest families were run by mother because father left the family -middle class families had both parents Feminization of poverty = poorest families are generally run by mother and male is absent. – female has less opportunity to support families - Middle class has stronger family structure with two parents Reasons for leaving: Land of opportunity and reuniting with family World system theory- Part 1- core Part 2- semiperiphery -provides raw goods and produces products Part 3- periphery - Provides raw materials - Unskilled labor Link between economics and migration - People migrate towards economic opportunity and migrate away from areas with no economic opportunity De jure versus de facto discrimination = de jure means being built into the law (e.g. Jim Crow). While de facto happens but is not protected by law (e.g. Muslim looking people in the airport).
