Mr. Aaren Yandrich English 112 February 23, 2009 Pierre Joseph Proudhon Pierre Joseph Proudhon, born on January 15, 1809, worked as a printer who became interested in politics at an early age. Through his printing, Proudhon was able to articulately learn Latin. He published his best work in 1840, What is Property? In this publication, Proudhon expressed his concerns with the new government. This book gained recognition from French authorities and even Karl Marx. In 1846, Proudhon published another important work titled, System of Economic Contradictions ; in response, Karl Marx published The Poverty of Philosophy in 1847. This was the beginning of the struggle and disagreement between Proudhon and Marx over many years. Proudhon was opposed to Marx’s idea of authoritarianism; rather, he believed socialism was attainable without the need of violent uprisings. Proudhon’s biggest impact was on the socialist movement (Spartacus Educational, “Pierre Joseph Proudhon”). In addition, Proudhon eventually became known as the founder of anarchism.
